Emma chain

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Emmakette (Dutch Emmaketen ) is a mountain range around 28 kilometers long, running from south to north in the Sipaliwini district in Suriname . The Emma chain lies north of Table Mountain with which it has strong geological similarities. The altitude increases slightly from south to north. The southern part of the mountain range is about 1.5 kilometers wide with heights of up to 750 meters. The northern part varies in width between three and five kilometers with heights that rise to the north: the IJzermantop (815 m), the Gonggryptop (940 m), the Staheltop (915 m) and theHendriktop (1030 m). The mountain range is named after Queen Emma of the Netherlands .

vegetation

The vegetation consists of forest, which turns into mountain rainforest at a height of about 900 meters . Savannah vegetation and swamp forests occur locally . However, the real savannah vegetation like on Table Mountain is missing.

exploration

The area around Hendriktop was explored in 1902 by Willem Jacob van Stockum and in 1922 by Stahel and Gonggryp. A more extensive exploration of the Emma chain - especially in the northern and central section - was carried out in 1959 by the so-called Emma chain expedition.
