Georg Herlitz

Georg Herlitz (born March 11, 1885 in Opole ; † January 8, 1968 in Jerusalem ) was a German and Israeli historian and archivist .

Life

Georg Herlitz studied history, philosophy and Semitic languages ​​in Berlin and Halle from 1904 to 1908 and received his doctorate from the University of Halle under Theodor Lindner in 1909 . From 1904 to 1911 he studied theology and Jewish sciences at the College for the Science of Judaism in Berlin. From 1911 he was responsible for organizing and indexing the files taken over at the General Archive of German Jews in Berlin as an archive assistant under Eugen Täubler . Herlitz stayed there until he was called up for military service in March 1916. In the five years he was employed at the general archive, Herlitz had learned the trade of archivist so well that the World Zionist Organization commissioned him in 1919 to set up and manage its house archive in Berlin. He was able to successfully transfer its holdings to Palestine in 1933 , where he himself subsequently made a decisive contribution to the development of the archive system. From 1935 until his retirement in 1955 he was director of the Central Zionist Archives in Jerusalem.

Together with Bruno Kirschner, he was the founder of the Jüdisches Lexikon , which appeared in four volumes from 1927 to 1930 . An encyclopedic manual of Jewish knowledge .
