(12612) Daumier is an asteroid of the main belt that was discovered on September 24, 1960 by the Dutch astronomer couple Cornelis Johannes van Houten and Ingrid van Houten-Groeneveld . The discovery came about as part of the Palomar-Leiden survey , during which Tom Gehrels examined field plates recorded at the University of Leiden with the 120 cm Oschin Schmidt telescope of the Palomar observatory .
The asteroid was named on April 2, 1999 after the French painter , sculptor , graphic artist and caricaturist Honoré Daumier (1808–1879), who gained importance as an important representative of realism through his political and socially critical caricatures.
