The 17th Eurovision Young Musicians took place on May 31, 2014 in Cologne , Germany . It was the second time that Germany hosted the competition after the competition in Berlin in 2002 .

On December 9, 2014, the EBU confirmed that Cologne would host the competition. Germany hosted the competition back in 2002 when the competition took place in Berlin .
format
This year the semi-finals were temporarily abolished and replaced by a preliminary round in which each candidate had 15 minutes to show off their talent. In the final, however, the maximum duration of the performance was five minutes. The preliminary round took place on May 26 and 27, 2014 and was broadcast live on youngmusicians.tv . In contrast to the semi-finals, none of the participants were eliminated in the preliminary round and all 14 acts competed in the final.

Preliminary round
In the preliminary round, the ratings were awarded by the jury. It was divided into seven participants each on May 26 and 27, 2014. The participants played the following pieces:

A total of 14 countries took part. Malta and Moldova made their debut while Bosnia-Herzegovina, Belarus, Georgia, Armenia and Ukraine withdrew from the competition. Portugal participated for the first time since the debut in 1994, Sweden for the first time since 2010 and Hungary for the first time since 2000. The positions 4 to 14 were not announced by the EBU.
The 15-year-old Austrian violinist Ziyu He prevailed against the 13 competitors with his interpretation of the first movement from Béla Bartók's 2nd violin concerto and was awarded first place by the jury. Urban Stanic (17) from Slovenia and Gergely Devich (15) from Hungary followed in second and third place .
