The 18th Junior Eurovision Song Contest is scheduled to take place on November 29, 2020. The competition is organized by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU). The event will take place in Poland for the second time , after the country's victory at JESC 2019 with the song “Superhero” by Viki Gabor . It is the seventh time that the competition has been hosted by last year's winning country. Telewizja Polska (TVP) is the first broadcaster to host two competitions in a row. Germany will take part in the competition for the first time.
venue
The offer to host the competition from Kazakhstan in December 2019 was rejected because the country is only an associate member of the EBU. Kazakhstan is only allowed to participate in the JESC if the host country invites it, similar to what was practiced with Australia in the first years of their participation. In addition, if a competition there was still possible at the time of the cancellation, but already very unlikely at the time, the competition would have had to be postponed to the warmer month of October in Kazakhstan, making JESC 2020 the earliest JESC of all time. Like Kazakhstan, Australia is not allowed to host the JESC, although it can participate in the JESC without an invitation. However, Australia was not interested in hosting the 2020 competition.
On May 16, 2020, during the Eurovision: Europe Shine a Light program, it was announced that the JESC would be produced on November 29 in a television studio in Warsaw. For the first time, the competition will not take place in an event hall. This is due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic , as you want to involve as few viewers as possible in order to reduce the risk of infection within the venue.
format
Executive supervisor
In January 2020, the EBU announced that Martin Österdahl will succeed Jon Ola Sand as the new Executive Supervisor of the Eurovision Song Contest and the Junior Eurovision Song Contest after the ESC 2020 . It is therefore unknown whether the format will be different for 2020.
Attendees
countries
So far 14 countries (as of August 13, 2020) have confirmed their participation. Germany will take part in the competition for the first time in 2020.
Australia and Ireland are withdrawing from the competition for the first time since their debut in 2015, and Wales since it first appeared in 2018. Even northern Macedonia does not participate the first time since, 2014. They all cite the COVID-19 pandemic and the resulting uncertainties about entering Poland and leaving their own country as the main reason for withdrawing.
