The 1st Junior Eurovision Song Contest was the premiere of the competition and took place on November 15, 2003 in Copenhagen , Denmark . The organizer was DR , the moderators were Camilla Ottesen and Remee . The winner of the competition was eleven-year-old Dino Jelusić from Croatia with the song Ti si moja prva ljubav (“You are my first love”). Spain finished second, the United Kingdom came third.
In advance of the competition, however, it was decided that the winning country would not be granted the event rights for the upcoming JESC in order not to expose the participants to unnecessary pressure. The Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2004 took place in Norway. Germany expressed interest in the competition and was already included in the list of participants, but withdrew for unexplained reasons and has not yet taken part in any competition. An initial participation was suspected in 2014, but the NDR withdrew on the grounds that the competition was probably not a successful format under German standards.
The JESC 2003 was the first Eurovision Song Contest ever to be broadcast in 16: 9 format. In addition, it was the first ESC that subsequently released a DVD on the market. The competition was also broadcast in Finland (YLE), Kosovo (RTK), Serbia and Montenegro (RTS / RTCG), Estonia (ETV), Germany (KIKA) and Australia (SBS).
For Belarus it was the first participation in an ESC, in the Eurovision Song Contest the country did not take part until 2004. While there was no entry in the Eurovision Song Contest in 60 years that won from start number two, the Junior Eurovision Song Contest did so in the first year.
participation
16 countries participated in the first edition. The interest in participation exceeded the expectations of the EBU , which therefore decided to grant a maximum of 15 countries. Germany and Slovakia were also on this list, although they both canceled at short notice. Poland and Belarus moved up to replace them. After increasing the number of participants, Cyprus was also allowed to appear as the sixteenth country.
Because of their experience with the MGP Nordic , the model of the JESC, Denmark was allowed to host the first competition.
