Portugal at the Junior Eurovision Song Contest
This article looks at the history of Portugal as a participant in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest .
Preliminary decisions
In 2006 and 2007 the participant was chosen by the Festival da Canção Junior .
Participation in the competition
The country took part for the first time in 2006 and did not return after a second participation in 2007, mainly because it was penultimate in both competitions. Nevertheless, according to the RTP, the ratings were high.
On July 28th, RTP announced that it was returning to JESC 2014. On September 4, 2014, however, it was canceled.
Portugal has been participating in the JESC again since 2017. On August 9, 2017, the official list of participants for the JESC 2017 was published, which also included Portugal as a participating country, the interest was rekindled by Salvador Sobral's victory at the Eurovision Song Contest in the same year . This time the country came third from bottom. In 2018, Portugal finished third to last, with all 42 points coming from the spectators; Portugal got nothing from the juries. The following year, the juries also gave no point to Portugal, but the audience gave 43 points. This was enough for place 16 out of 19, which means that, unlike her predecessors, the participant Joana Almeida did not place in the last three.
