The 16th Junior Eurovision Song Contest took place on November 25, 2018 in Belarus' capital Minsk . It was the second time since 2010 that Belarus has hosted. The Belarusian television company BTRC was responsible for hosting the competition.
Poland won the first ever Eurovision Song Contest when it entered the competition for the fifth time. The first-time participants had varying degrees of success: while Kazakhstan came in sixth, Wales came last in 20th place. France, returning after 14 years, came in second just ahead of Australia.
venue
On October 15, 2017, the EBU announced that the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2018 would take place in the Belarusian capital Minsk - even though Russia later won the competition in 2017.
The EBU justified the premature decision with the fact that Minsk had submitted a very strong application to host. In addition, the early decision gives more time to organize the next competition.
The host of the contest was the Belarusian television broadcaster BTRC , which already hosted the JESC in 2010.
In November 2017, the EBU announced that the Minsk Arena would be the venue for the competition. The arena was the venue in 2010 . It is also considered to be one of the largest venues in the history of the JESC.
For the following competition it was announced that, as between 2013 and 2017, the winner will have the privilege to host the next JESC.
Attendees
countries
A total of 20 countries took part in 2018, a record since the Junior Eurovision Song Contest began in 2003. Never before have so many countries participated at the same time.
Wales and Kazakhstan took part in a Eurovision Song Contest for the very first time, but in 2017 Wales already entered the “Eurovision Choir Of The Year”. France returned for the first time since debuting in 2004, while Azerbaijan competed for the first time since 2013. Although a rule says that a maximum of 18 countries can participate, this rule has been suspended for the 2018 ESC winner from Israel, who participated for the third time after a one-year break. Ukraine had previously announced that it would withdraw from the competition due to financial difficulties, but in the end it was on the official list of participants of the EBU. Cyprus canceled its participation without giving any specific reasons. The last place in the previous year may be a reason.
On the basis of decisions by the NDR - which is responsible for Germany's participation in the Eurovision Song Contest - Germany has not been allowed to take part in the competition since the Junior Eurovision Song Contest was founded .
