The 3rd Eurovision Young Musicians took place on May 27, 1986 at Koncerthuset in Copenhagen , Denmark . The host was Danmarks Radio , which hosted this competition for the first time.

The winner of the 1986 edition was the French pianist Sandrine Lazarides. It was France's first victory in the competition. On the other hand, the Swiss pianist Marian Rosenfeld came in second, while the Finnish cellist Jan-Erik Gustafsson took third.

venue

Danmarks Radio chose the Koncerthuset in Copenhagen as the venue . It was the first time since the Eurovision Song Contest in 1964 that Denmark hosted a Eurovision event.

format

Each country sends a musician who is not older than 19 years to the competition. He then plays an instrument and presents a piece with it. The musician is supported by the Danish Radio Symphony Orchestra . Since the number of participants would exceed the time frame for a final, two semi-finals were introduced. In the end, a professional jury decided only five countries that will appear in the final. The jury then also decides the first three places there. The following jurors sat on the jury in 1986:

  • ItalyItaly Claudio Scimone (Chairman)
  • BelgiumBelgium Georges Dumortier
  • DenmarkDenmark Poul Birkelund
  • GermanyGermany Siegfried Palm
  • FinlandFinland Hannu-Ilari Lampila
  • FranceFrance Teresa Llacuna
  • Yugoslavia Socialist Federal RepublicYugoslavia Jasna Nemec Novak
  • NetherlandsNetherlands Ton Hartsuiker
  • SwedenSweden Bjorn Liljequist
  • United KingdomUnited Kingdom David Willcocks
  • United StatesUnited States Carole Dawn Reinhart

Moderation

The Danish presenter Anette Faaborg acted as moderator.

Attendees

  • Countries that participated in 1986
  • Countries that have already been eliminated in the semi-finals
  • A total of 15 countries took part in the Eurovision Young Musicians 1986, eight more than in 1984. The introduction of two semi-finals in 1986 allowed more countries to take part. In the end, Belgium, Ireland, Israel, Italy and Yugoslavia made their debut here.

The Nordic countries Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden did not take part in this competition together for the first time, but as individual participating countries. Previously, these countries sent a joint participant to the competition, which took part in 1982 under the Norwegian flag and in 1984 under the Finnish flag. In theory, only Denmark and Sweden made their debut, while Norway returned to competition.

Portugal was originally supposed to make its debut too, but no suitable candidate was found, so that the country withdrew from the competition in the end.

    Semifinals

In order not to exceed the timeframe of the finals, two semi-finals were introduced. These took place on May 22, 1986 and May 23, 1986. Otherwise little is known about these semifinals. The following countries have already dropped out:
