The 23rd Concours Eurovision de la Chanson , the official title this year, took place on April 22nd, 1978 in the French capital Paris .

particularities

Israel , which has been participating since 1973, won this competition with Izhar Cohen and his accompanying group, who performed the song A-Ba-Ni-Bi . Second place went to Belgium , third to hosts France . If the French song had won, it would most likely have been disqualified as it emerged on the day of rehearsal that Il y aura toujours des violons had been released as early as 1976.

For the first time, the competition was presented jointly by two moderators. For the Federal Republic of Germany joined Ireen Sheer with the song Fire on. She reached 6th place, three places better than the Swiss Carole Vinci (Vivre) . For Austria , the Springtime group competed with Mrs. Caroline Robinson , but only reached 15th place.

Jahn Teigen competed for Norway . With his interpretation of the song Mil etter mil , he received no points from any country and went down in history as the first interpreter since the introduction of the new rating system in 1975 to receive zero points.

With CoCo and the Bad Old Days post , the UK failed to make the top 10 for the first time since debuting in 1957.

The competition was also broadcast live for the first time in Dubai and Jordan.

When it was clear that Israel would win, Jordanian television stopped broadcasting and showed a bouquet of daffodils. It was later announced that Belgium (which came second) had won the contest.
