Fire was the German contribution to the 1978 Eurovision Song Contest , which was sung by Ireen Sheer in German. It was Sheer's second Eurovision appearance after representing Luxembourg in 1974 with Bye Bye I Love You , essentially in French.
Music and lyrics
The song is an up-tempo hit about the power and "fire" of love. The protagonist has “sworn” never to be “trained by men”, but succumbs to the temptation of love, which ultimately does not turn out to be dangerous: “Don't run away when you feel it is there. / You are in no danger at all. "
Origin and reception
The song was written by Jean Frankfurter and John Möring and produced by Frankfurter. The single was released in March 1978 by EMI / Electrola . The song reached number 39 in the German charts and was placed for five weeks. Sheer also recorded fire in English as Fire .
Sheer sang the song three times in the ZDF hit parade , at a time when it was organized according to sales figures, on May 29, 1978 (16th place), on June 26, 1978 (tenth place) and on July 24, 1978 (15th place) ).
In 2019 Ireen Sheer took up fire again and sang the song among others with Willkommen bei Carmen Nebel .
Song contest
Stock selection was the subject of discussions in Germany in the run-up to the competition. The Südwestfunk in Baden-Baden , responsible for that year , only came to an agreement after internal back and forth on the singer, who, however , had just won the preliminary decision in 1978 ; it was seen as “a kind of stopgap solution”. On April 15, 1978, Ireen Sheer presented the song in the show Auf Los geht's los with Joachim Fuchsberger . The critics in Germany wrote that she was “without a chance” in Paris. But Sheer made a professional appearance, appeared calmly on the stage in Paris in a long white dress with a small fur bolero and was also able to convince vocally. The song was listed in thirteenth place at the Song Contest, between Nilüfer and Nazar from Turkey with Sevince and Caline & Olivier Toussaint from Monaco with Les jardins de Monaco . Jean Frankfurter conducted the orchestra. At the end of the vote, it had achieved 84 points, placing it in 6th place out of 20 contributions.
Ireen Sheer returned to the competition in 1985, then represented Luxembourg again and belonged to the group Margo, Franck Olivier, Diane Solomon, Ireen Sheer, Chris and Malcolm Roberts with Children, Kinder, Enfants .
