Ireen Sheer ; her real name is Ireen Wooldridge (born February 25, 1949 in Romford , England ) is a British pop singer who grew up bilingual. She spent her youth in Billericay , Essex , England, where she also went to school.

Career

Ireen Sheer is the daughter of an English father († 2017) and a German mother († 2009). She was discovered in a talent competition in 1961 and, parallel to her success, completed a bank apprenticeship. In the 1960s, she first worked with pop groups like Family Dogg .

From 1970 she devoted herself to her solo career, initially with English recordings. As she grew up bilingual, Polydor saw the opportunity to market the English hit Hey Pleasure Man in the version of Oh Holiday in German-speaking countries. In addition to the single Goodbye Mama , which was listed in the top 5 of the German charts in 1973, she had three other hits in the official charts. In addition, three of her albums were in the charts between 2005 and 2019. Many of her singles were able to place themselves in various hit parades on the radio and were in the airplay charts.

In her now 50-year career she has released over 20 albums and over 110 singles.

In addition to her solo recordings, Ireen Sheer sang duets with her then husband Gavin du Porter as well as with Bernhard Brink , Gilbert Bécaud and Cliff Richard .

In December 2017 Ireen Sheer took on the project pop stars for children part and sang with the group the Christmas hit on once a. The hit was released in December and the proceeds will benefit children in need. The song was re-recorded in 2018 and released again for Christmas.

Movie and TV

After her breakthrough with Goodbye Mama , Ireen Sheer and her colleague Chris Roberts made the film If Every Day Was a Sunday in the summer of 1973 , a mixture of a music film and a comedy made up of mistakes. Other actors included Peter Weck , Lotte Ledl and Georg Thomalla . The film opened in German cinemas on October 19, 1973.

As a singer, Ireen Sheer was and is a guest in many German-language TV music programs. Between the 1970s and 1990s she appeared frequently in the ZDF hit parade . Ireen Sheer is one of the few pop singers who also appear in major private television shows, for example in 2007 in the program The Ultimate Chart Show on RTL. Her appearances are mainly focused on public television.

Participation in the Eurovision Song Contest and preliminary decisions

In 1974 she took part in the Eurovision Song Contest for Luxembourg . Her title Bye Bye, I Love You reached number 4. Four years later she sang for Germany. Her title Feuer reached number 6. 1985 Ireen Sheer sang again for Luxemburg with Margo , Franck Olivier , Chris Roberts , Diane Solomon & Malcolm Roberts . Her title Children, Kinder, Enfants reached number 13.

She took part in German preliminary rounds two more times : 1976 with One Water, One Wine and 2002 with Es ist never too late , together with Bernhard Brink , but could not qualify.

Life

Ireen Sheer has lived in Germany since 1973. She was married to Gavin du Porter for 24 years ; they separated in 2000. Since September 2016, Ireen Sheer has been living with her manager Klaus-Jürgen Kahl in Berlin-Wilmersdorf . Before that, the two were based in Ellmau for 15 years ; they married in August 2010. She lived temporarily in Unna - Billmerich . In 2014, Gerhard-Hess-Verlag published her biography Jetzt oder nie , in which she also criticized her marriage to Gavin du Porter. In June 2019 she applied for German citizenship at the Berlin district office.
