Cindy & Bert was a German hit duo , consisting of Jutta Berger geb. Gusenburger (born January 26, 1948 in Völklingen ) and Norbert Maria Berger (born September 12, 1945 in Völklingen, † July 14, 2012 in Düsseldorf ). Cindy & Bert became known in the 1970s. Her most successful songs were Immer wieder sonntags (1973), Spaniens Guitars and Aber am Abend da Gypsy (both 1974). At the end of the 1980s, Jutta Berger established herself as a solo singer under the name Cindy Berger .

Career

Norbert Berger came from a family of musicians. His grandfather Josef Berger was from 1888 to 1931, his father Alex Berger from 1931 to 1973 organist at the Catholic parish church of St. Eligius in Völklingen. In the early 1960s, Norbert Berger was the electric bass player in the amateur band Blue Birds, for which a singer was wanted. With Jutta Gusenburger, then a student, this band then appeared as Jutta and the quintet Royal .

Since 1965 Norbert Berger and Jutta Gusenburger were on the road as a singing duo under the name Cindy & Bert. The couple married on May 20, 1967.

In 1969 the duo's first record, Saturday Morning , was released, which was already a considerable success. Other successful titles from this period were titles such as Caesar and Cleopatra , Ich bin 'Heimweh , Holly Holy or Everyone needs everyone . Her single Der Hund von Baskerville from 1970, a cover version of Black Sabbath's Paranoid , which Bert retyped the text, enjoys a certain collector's value today . Bert was a trained industrial clerk, Cindy worked as an insurance clerk. As the performances became more and more successful, both gave up their jobs in 1971 to only work in show business.

For the Eurovision Song Contest , Cindy & Bert first applied for the German preliminary decision in 1972 with Geh die Strasse and narrowly failed. Also in 1973 they tried Where should I go? and two people and one way . In the same year, however, they had their greatest success with Always again on Sundays . In 1974 they represented Germany at the 1974 Eurovision Song Contest in Brighton and came last with Die Sommermelodie . At the German preliminary decision for the 1978 Grand Prix they tried again unsuccessfully with Chanson d'été and Was die Sterne .

In the meantime, the duo has had several successes such as Spain's guitars (1974) and When the roses bloom in Malaga (1975) and became the most successful hit duo of the 1970s. In 1976 their son Sascha was born, who became known as a musician under the name Berger . Since 1984 Cindy & Bert lent their voice to the Saarlodris , who were used as a commercial separator in the television program of Saarland Radio . Until the late 1980s, the duo recorded titles together.

In 1988 the couple divorced. After that, they initially went their separate ways. Cindy Berger started a solo career. She took part twice in German preliminary decisions for the Eurovision Song Contest: in 1988 with And I want to live too (2nd place) and in 1991 with Never Alone (7th place). In 1989 she and Roger Whittaker recorded Stay with me today . Bert Berger was mainly active as a composer , lyricist and producer . He had his own recording studio and music publisher since the 1970s. In the mid-1990s, Cindy & Bert then performed together again. They sang their old hits on various oldie TV shows, but also recorded new titles. In 1997 they reached 7th place at the German Schlager Festival with Ich have die Rose geseh'n .

Cindy & Bert lived together for a week in the Big Brother village in 2006 , which was broadcast daily on RTL II . In 2007 Cindy Berger's solo album Zeitlos was released, from which the tracks 1000 Seelenfeuer and Saludos Amigo were extracted as singles. In 2010 she acted alongside eleven other jury members as a juror at the international German-language singing competition Musikpreis Stimmschatz 2010 . In September 2011 Cindy & Bert took part in the TV format Cover my Song on the VOX channel . While the rapper Favorite rapped their hit Every Sunday in a new sound garb (and the original refrain was sampled), the Schlagerduo worked on the autobiographical rap song Ich miss' dich to the song You are strong . This new version of Always Again Sundays then appeared on the Internet for download.

On July 14, 2012 Bert Berger died of complications from pneumonia in a Düsseldorf hospital. He was buried in the Catholic cemetery in the Lohausen district .

Cindy Berger lives in Berlin . In June 2013, she released the solo album At least durable until… . In the spring of 2014, she took part in the seventh season of Let's Dance with the professional dancer Marius Iepure . In June 2018, she released the song It's always all good with newcomer Justin Winter .
