German preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest 1974

For the German preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest 1974 , the German entry was selected in camera. The performers Cindy & Bert , Jürgen Marcus and Anne Karin were nominated by the Hessischer Rundfunk in a pre-selection . Composers and lyricists were asked to write two songs each for the performers. In addition, two songs were submitted by composers who were selected for the competition by the entertainment directors of the ARD broadcasters .

On January 23, 1974, all twelve submitted titles were rejected in the internal selection. This was justified by the fact that there was not a sufficient number of titles available for an informed decision and that there were also no clear favorites. A grace period was set until February 20, 1974 for the authors to submit another song. With a selection of now 24 songs, three titles emerged:

Interpreter Title
Music (M) and Text (T)
Anne Karin Back then in spring
M: Rudi Bauer ; T: Gerd Thumser
Jürgen Marcus Grand Prix d'amour
M: Jack White ; T: Fred Jay
Cindy & Bert The summer melody
M: Werner Scharfenberger ; T: Kurt Feltz

The selection fell on Cindy & Bert with the title Die Sommermelodie , which was presented to the public in the program The Monday Painters on March 11, 1974. The duo took 14th and last place with three points at the Eurovision Song Contest in Brighton (the winners were ABBA ), together with Norway, Switzerland and Portugal.
