The rules for the first Eurovision Song Contest in 1956 in Lugano ( Switzerland ) stipulated that a preliminary decision had to be held in each participating country. In Germany this was planned for May 1, 1956 in Cologne. However, none of the artists on the list of participants can remember the event. One singer can even prove that she performed in Berlin that evening. There are also no records such as reports from newspapers or magazines. It can be assumed that the preliminary decision was only made pro forma in order to comply with the regulations, but never took place.

Other sources claim a similar event.

Representatives of Germany at the international competition were Walter Andreas Schwarz with Im waiting room for great happiness and Freddy Quinn with That's how it works every night .
