Angèle Durand

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Angèle Durand , bourgeois Angèle Caroline Liliane Josette Marie-José DeGeest (born October 23, 1925 in Antwerp , Belgium , † December 22, 2001 in Augsburg ), was a Belgian singer and actress . She was married to producer Nils Nobach from 1958 to 1961 . She later dated the entertainer Lou van Burg for a while.

Life

After Angèle Durand became an orphan at the age of seven, she grew up with an aunt and was brought up strictly in a boarding school for girls in Belgium. She first appeared on stage as a singer at the age of 15. She took second place in a young talent competition. Then she got engagements in the radio, first in Brussels , later with the US broadcaster AFN in Stuttgart . She first sang as a jazz singer in the band of trumpeter Rex Stewart . In 1950 she was allowed to sing a concert with the legendary Duke Ellington in Brussels as a replacement for an unusual singer . A short time later she went on a major European tour with him. Then she got several engagements in variety shows as well as radio recordings at NWDR and HR . Further stations in her life were Hanover and Hamburg . Her first big hit in Belgium was C'est si bon . In 1950 the German version of C'est si bon also became a hit in Germany.

In 1951 Durand met her future husband Nils Nobach, who became her producer and whom she married in 1958. In 1956 she achieved another great success with her song So ist Paris , which was represented in the charts in several countries for weeks. In the same year she had another hit with C'est magnifique , which was followed in 1957 by Melodie d'amour . The Little Rock record is a particular rarity . Durand sings the German version of the film song from blondes (originally sung by Marilyn Monroe and Jane Russell ) with Bibi Johns .

In 1957, alongside Maurice Chevalier , she was one of the stars of the Tivoli in Copenhagen . She made numerous tours across Europe with all the well-known artists of the time (including two tours with Zarah Leander ) and also got up with Edith Piaf , Josephine Baker , Peter Kreuder , René Carol , Rudi Schuricke , Liselotte Malkowsky , Erwin Lehn and many others the stage. The group Manhattan Transfer made their song Chanson d'amour from 1958 a million-dollar hit in 1977. In 1960 she took part in the German preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest in a duet with Rex Gildo and the song Abitur der Liebe . In addition to her numerous television appearances in music programs, Angèle Durand also starred in several music films in the 1950s and early 1960s. She stood in front of the camera with Yves Montand , Cornelia Froboess , Joachim Fuchsberger , Senta Berger , Fred Bertelmann , Karin Dor , Grethe Weiser , Hans Albers and various other stars of the time.

After her divorce in 1961 and the change of her record label, she had another great success with Ja ich bin die große Frau . On the occasion of a tour, she met her partner Lou van Burg , for whom she took over the management for years and renounced her own career. But this relationship also failed. As a passionate cook, she fulfilled a dream and ran her own restaurant for several years, where she also enjoyed cooking herself.

In the 1970s she began a second career as an actress on stage. In several plays at the Schleswig-Holstein State Theater (e.g. in the world premiere of the Peter Kreuder musical "Wedding Mary") and in Gelsenkirchen (including in the Peter Kreuder musical "Madame Scandaleuse" and as "Golde" in " Anatevka ") ) she was on stage until the 1980s. Even after that, she was drawn to various stages again and again. In Paris she celebrated success as “Mrs. Peachum ”in the“ Threepenny Opera ”. In 1980 she recorded a long-playing record with songs by Claire Waldoff . In 1990, on the occasion of her 50th anniversary on stage, she took the new single Paths that lead through life and Because I'm still alive . She played repeatedly in musicals (for example the Dolly in " Hello Dolly ", the Mother Superior in "Non (n) sense" and others). In 1994, the sequel "Non (n) sens II" in Essen caused a sold-out house for months.

Furthermore, she had numerous appearances at gala events all over Germany in the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s and also toured with her solo program “Das Theater und Ich”, in which she sang songs from her various creative periods, told anecdotes from her life and Recited texts. She was also always a very welcome guest on radio and television; In 1984, the then still new TV broadcaster RTL even broadcast a complete 2-hour concert by Angèle Durand from the Aachener Kurpark-Terrassen, where she performed repeatedly in the 1980s. On November 27, 1993 she was a studio guest on the 100th Deutschlandfunk - "Wunschnacht".

Until recently, Angèle Durand was on stage, both in the theater and with her vocal programs. Her last obligation, the participation in the operetta “ Der Vetter aus Dingsda ” in Augsburg , could not be fulfilled because of illness. She died in Augsburg on December 22, 2001 at the age of 76.

After living in Hamburg on the Outer Alster for a few years, Angèle Durand lived in Düsseldorf from the early 1980s.
