occupation

Hula-Hopp, Conny (reference title: Hula Hopp Conny) is a German mix-up comedy with music from 1959. Directed by Heinz Paul , Cornelia Froboess plays a young woman who poses as her own brother. The man she falls in love with is embodied by Rex Gildo , who at the time still performed under the name of Alexander Gildo .

The film premiered on March 5, 1959.

action

Conny Haller is a fun-loving teenager and great music fan. Together with friends, she has founded her own band, with which she regularly appears in the restaurant “Das Bunte Krokodil”.

The American record producer John Newman is looking for a German host family for his son Billy, who will study music in Germany. With the help of Dr. Berning from the International Student Exchange Service chooses the Haller family on the assumption that Conny is a boy.

In order to keep up appearances and not to lose the chance of a trip to Honolulu , Conny dresses up and pretends to be a boy. Unforeseen circumstances mean that the young woman has to invent a sister named Cornelia who lives in a boarding school , with whom "he" allegedly does not get along at all.

When Billy's father arrives unexpectedly, additional complications arise. It is not only between the music publisher and Conny's mother that there are delicate advances. There is also a crackling between Billy and Conny when Conny admits to Billy in a situation that forces her to, that she is really a girl. When Billy's father learns the truth, he feels betrayed, breaks off contact with Diana Haller and wants to leave with his son on the spot. Conny and Billy will of course find a way to prevent this.

criticism

The film sheets wrote that Conny moves "easily and talented in a trouser role, which is derived from the ambiguity of her name".

The lexicon of international films judged that it was certainly "not a particularly witty film, but at least played cheerfully."
