Smash (often spelled S * M * A * S * H ) are a punk rock trio that enjoyed a brief period of notoriety in the UK in the 1990s . S * M * A * S * H was founded by Ed Borrie, Salvatore Alessi and Rob Hague in Welwyn Garden City in Hertfordshire , England .

style

The band is reminiscent of the punk and new wave of the late 1970s and early 1980s. The British music press enthusiastically received the band, which, together with bands such as Echobelly , Sleeper , Compulsion and These Animal Men, founded the new wave-of-new-wave scene. Most of the bands took a negative attitude towards S * M * A * S * H.

history

Lady Love your cunt , the band's second single, was a tribute to feminism . She appeared on the debut mini album S * M * A * S * H , which was a compilation of the first two singles and which was well received by critics. When the band got a recording deal, they toured tirelessly, which led to an increase in coverage and fan attention. Though the band played almost every night, they found time to poke fun at the critics and sometimes went under the name S * H * I * T * E.

The trio made an extraordinary appearance on Top of the Pops when they sang Shame live to a backing track previously recorded especially for the event . They were the first to appear on the BBC chart show without officially releasing a single first.

Her biggest success was the single (I Want To) Kill Somebody , which reached number 26 on the UK singles chart. Due to its controversial text (the lyrics explicitly target members of the incumbent British cabinet) the single was only available for a short time in regular stores. Their debut album Self Abused was not a commercial success as there were some production issues and the release date coincided with the new albums by the top artists of the time. Even so, the trio remained popular with the critics.

The band recorded a single on the Sub Pop label in Seattle , but remained almost unknown outside of the UK , apart from a gig in the US and a few support slots in Europe. The EP "Another Love Song" followed in 1995, before the group released their last single Rest of My Life a year later . The band split in 1996. The band did not fit into the Britpop scene like the other New Wave of New Wave bands, and accordingly their success at the time was a disappointment compared to previous successes.

In 1997 bassist Salvatore Alessi joined the band Carter USM , but in 2004 S * M * A * S * H reformed. They recorded some new songs and gave concerts in the UK. Icon , the second album by S * M * A * S * H, was released on October 8, 2007 - 13 years after their first album Self Abused. Further activities followed, including the release of an updated version of "(I Want To) Kill Somebody" in 2014. In 2018 the album Goodbye WGC was released.

S * M * A * S * H were portrayed together with These Animal Men in the 2015 documentary "Flawed is Beautiful".
