Surname

The name Welwyn Garden City (pronunciation: [ 'wɛlɪn ]; German translation: Welwyn Garden City ) is often abbreviated to WGC or Welwyn GC . This is not to be confused with the eponymous neighboring community Welwyn (also Welwyn Village or Old Welwyn ), an independent community 3 to 4 kilometers north of WGC that has existed since the High Middle Ages.

history

Welwyn Garden City is a garden city in the spirit of the Ebenezer Howard movement . Howard himself founded WGC in the 1920s (the second British garden city after Letchworth Garden City ); it was designed by Louis de Soissons.

The city is the birthplace of the idea of "Meals on Wheels" (Eng. " Food on Wheels "). In December 1943, meals were first delivered to needy citizens here by vehicle.

Location and traffic

WGC is located about 35 kilometers north of central London and forms since 1974 with the former rural districts ( "rural disctricts" ) Hatfield and Welwyn the District (since 2006 Borough ) Welwyn Hatfield . Like Hatfield , WGC is increasingly acting as a dormitory for commuters working in London. In 2003 the entire district had around 97,000 inhabitants.

From London in the south, Welwyn Garden City can be reached via the motorway-like A1 (M) , which runs past the city to the west; the A414 branches off from it to the east and passes WGC to the south. The station is of WGC on the route of the East Coast Main Line , a major axis of British Rail , the London over Yorkshire to Scotland leads. At Welwyn it leads over a viaduct from Victorian times over the river valley of the Mimram.

economy

The city's main economic drivers are the food industry , pharmaceuticals industry and computer companies . One of the largest companies is a breakfast cereal manufacturer that is now part of the Nestlé Group. The factory is to be closed, however, because the premises in WGC are too small for the company; production is to be relocated to Devon . The supermarket chain Tesco has a larger branch in the north of the city .

One of the garden city architects' ideas was that all residents should shop in the same department store . Therefore, they set the Welwyn Store as the central point of contact in the city center. Now part of the John Lewis PLC chain of department stores, it is no longer the only one in town.

In 1990 the Howard Center shopping mall, named after the city's founder, opened. According to the organizers, the first “German Easter Festival” in the United Kingdom ( “German Easter Festival” , in the style of a Christmas market ) took place in front of the Howard Center from March 31 to April 17, 2006 .
