The English town of Letchworth Garden City (often called Letchworth for short ) in the county of Hertfordshire was the first attempt at realizing a garden city . It was founded in 1903 around 50 kilometers north of London .
The planning was carried out by Barry Parker and Raymond Unwin . The total area consists of 2057 hectares and the open spaces within the city 52 hectares of land.
Letchworth Garden City was supposed to meet the new social reform approaches that Ebenezer Howard had put in urban planning. A separate industry was set up to form an independent small-town unit. However, this city was never self-sufficient, but dependent on London from the start.
Today 33,249 inhabitants live in the city (as of 2011). The city is the administrative seat of the district of North Hertfordshire .
