history

The first historical mention of Chagny dates from the reign of the Frankish King Charles the Bald . The name of the town at that time was Cavagnacum, later Chaigny and then over time it became Chagny.

During the Hundred Years War , marauding mercenary troops, so-called Grandes Compagnies , set up their headquarters in the fortress of the old castle and from there plundered the entire area. In 1369 King Charles V sent his commander-in-chief, Bertrand du Guesclin , to Chagny to persuade their leader to move to Castile and take part in the war for the succession to the throne between Henry of Trastamara and Peter the Cruel . With this move he was able to free the province from the pillaging troops. After the mercenaries left, the fortress was razed.

Due to its favorable location on the traffic arteries towards Autun , Beaune and Chalon-sur-Saône, there was a positive economic development of the city. This was the opening of the Canal du Center in 1793 and the Paris-Marseille railway of PLM favored in 1849, so that to glassworks and brickworks an industrial center developed. The canal has since lost its importance for industry, but is used for water tourism with pleasure boats and houseboats .
