Toponymy

Clux ( pronunciation : [ kly ]) is first mentioned in 1123. The name is likely to go back to the Latin clusus, clausus meaning closed, enclosed . The description should refer to the seclusion in the large forest area, other geographical features do not allow this designation to be inferred. It can be assumed that a Gallo-Roman settlement already existed on this important Roman road.

La Villeneuve goes back to the Latin name Villa nova in the sense of a new settlement and was first mentioned in 1215. It almost seems as if the inhabitants of Clux wanted to leave the seclusion and built this new settlement outside the forest. The place name is widespread in France and was used for new settlements in the Middle Ages.

history

From a fort or a castle there was still an oval elevation in Clux , on which a farmhouse was built in the 18th century. In 1909 a one-class school was built and in 1912 a wash house with a cattle trough.

In 1275 the Ecclesia de Nova Villa is mentioned, i.e. the church that is consecrated to Saint-Denis and was the church of both parishes from ancient times.

The history of both communities has always been closely linked. In the 13th century they were owned by the de Vienne family and in 1291 came to the Dukes of Burgundy along with several other places . In 1790 the cantons were introduced and the two municipalities were part of the canton Longepierre until they became part of the canton Verdun-sur-le-Doubs in 1802 . In 1923 Clux was electrified. Charles Borgeot, Senator and Mayor of Clux, and A. Borgeot, Mayor of La Villeneuve, founded an intermunicipal association, thanks to which the water supply was implemented in both municipalities in 1933 and a water tower was built in 1936 in the east of Clux . The school in Clux and the church in La Villeneuve always served both parishes. Thanks to the clayey soils and the abundance of wood, ceramic and brick production became an important line of business, especially in the La Villeneuve district . At times there were three brickworks and at least two sawmills .

On January 1, 2015, the two municipalities merged and today form the municipality of Clux-Villeneuve .
