Toponymy

The first mention goes back to 1030 Ansedeus de Naviliaco signed a charter. In 1073 the church of Navilly is mentioned as Ecclesia Naviliensis Castri while the Ecclesia de Naviliaco Villa , i.e. the church at Les Montots , is mentioned as early as 1090 . The name might be related to navis (lat. Ship). This should prove that the Doubs was already navigable in Gallo-Roman times.

history

The parish actually consisted of two parts, on the one hand Navilly-le-Château , the northern part with the castle and the church, which is dedicated to the Assumption . In addition there was Navilly-la-Ville with the church that was consecrated to Saint-Léger and is now completely destroyed.

At the beginning of the 11th century, Navilly was the seat of the Milonides family , of whom Count Otto Wilhelm was descended from. In 1434, Navilly-le-Château and Navilly-la-Ville , two separate settlement areas, received charter from Isabel of Portugal , Duchess of Burgundy. In 1461 Jean Constain , the cellar master of the Duke of Burgundy, owned Navilly as a fief, in 1476 Jean de Rupt , who was also lord of Louhans, and in 1490 the Marquis de Rothelin . At that time there was a ferry service across the Doubs , but it was dangerous during floods. Les Montots , a hamlet on a hill above the Guyotte , was a domain in its own right. In 1636 Navilly was sacked by the troops of Gallas . In the 18th century there was still a sizeable vineyard where a decent red wine grew, but it disappeared at the beginning of the 20th century. For a long time the community was an economic and handicraft center, owned a cheese factory, mills and brick factories. The last ship mill was dismantled in 1915. The Pagot mill was founded in 1909 and existed until 1967. In 1922 houses were built for the workers in the brickworks. After a fire in 1969, the Navilly brickyard was finally closed in 1972. The Chalon-sur-Saône - Dole railway ran through Navilly, in 1954 passenger traffic ceased and the station closed until it was demolished in 1997. In the 20th century the population fell markedly , which is why social housing was built in 1997, and today there has been a slight increase again.

The bridge over the Guyotte was built in 1789, the Navilly bridge in 1790 . Both bridges were built under the architect Pierre-Jean Guillemot and are still of particular beauty and fascination today.
