Toponymy

The first mentions of places in the municipality go back to the 6th century and are among the oldest documented mentions in Bresse. Thapariacum (today: Grand-Taperey) is mentioned in 561, Blaicum appears in 563 (today: Grands-Flais).

The town itself is the first time in 1190 as Stagnum Sancti-Boneti (Latin Stagnum = pond, lake or Étang called). In 1270 the place is called Saint Bonnost , 1326 as Sambonot . Since 1844 it has been called Saint-Bonnet-en-Bresse . The saint to which the name refers is Bonitus of Clermont . After the revolution , the municipality was named Bonnet-sur-Guyotte .

history

The place is on the old Roman road , vie gravée , which led from Verdun-sur-le-Doubs to Poligny . At Saint-Bonnet-en-Bresse it crossed the Guyotte , continued via Mirbel , Petit-Taperey to La Chapelle-Saint-Sauveur , to finally reach Bellevesvre . Another connection ran from Saint-Bonnet-en-Bresse to Terrans and on to Pierre-de-Bresse .

In Petit-Taperey there was a half-timbered house with a gallery, moat and drawbridge . The Dukes of Burgundy used to hunt there and the house is called a castle . Both Grand-Taperey and Les Flais were separate domains and jurisdictions.

In 1270, knight Milon de Sennecey gave the proceeds from the forest of Saint-Bonnet to the Benedictines of Saint-Pierre in Chalon-sur-Saône , who in turn ceded them to the parish priest of Saint-Bonnet-en-Bresse. Later the rule belonged to changing families, in 1372 Marquet de Saubiez , bailiff and tax collector of Montmorot , he owned, among others, the rule of La Faye near Saint-Germain-du-Bois . Later the boutons were lords of Saint-Bonnet, in 1479 the king gave them to Jean de Saubiez de Frontenay , notary of Sagy and Louhans, for usufruct by him and his eldest son. In the second half of the 18th century until the Revolution, the rule and jurisdiction belonged to Philibert-Bernard Gagne de Perrigny , Lord of Louhans and numerous other places, then Bénigne Legoux and Louis Barnabé de Baudéon , Counts of Parabère , his sons-in-law. Ritter François Esmonin , Life President of the Court of Besançon became master of Aloise and Petit-Taperey .

The chapel of Saint-Bonnet has long been destroyed, the village church is dedicated to St. Mary Magdalene , in Flais there is still a chapel dedicated to St. Benedict . People used to pray to Saint Maurus at a spring around 200 meters south of the church against rheumatism . A mill has been in use since 1550; it was still in operation at the beginning of the 20th century. The Saint-Bonnet fair has been known since the 17th century and the Marché du muguet ( Lily of the Valley Market) is also famous.

The first Mairie was built in 1827 and rebuilt in 1869, along with a classroom. Since 1871, Saint-Bonnet had a train station on the Chalon-sur-Saône - Dole line . You can still see the chimney of a pumping station where the steam locomotives were supplied with water. In 1883 the Dijon - Bourg-en-Bresse line was opened, making Saint-Bonnet a railway junction and developing mainly around the station. A beautiful hotel restaurant still exists today. In the 1950s the Chalon-Dole line and the station were closed. Today's Mairie is located in the old rectory, in 1988 there were still around 40 farms.
