Toponymy

The place is mentioned as early as 928-936 in the books of Saint-Vincent in Mâcon as Sylviniacum villam in pago Scudingorum positam cum capella (The place Sylviniacum with a chapel, located in the Gau of Scutinger). One theory says that the name goes back to the Latin name a sapinis (German: near the fir trees) and is mentioned in 1200 as Savigniacum de Reverso Monte . Guillemaut's explanation is more plausible , according to which it was a question of the former property of a Savinus , Sabinus or Savinius . Supplemented with the Gallic possessive suffix -ac, -acus , the form Saviniacum resulted , as it is mentioned in 954. The fact that the title in the Latinized form became Sylviniacum (silva, Latin = forest) may indicate that the area was once densely forested. What is striking, however, is the fact that the addition Revermont appears as de Reverso Monte as early as 1200 .

history

The lordship of Savigny-en-Revermont belonged to the lords of Sainte-Croix until the end of the 14th century , who gave the place some importance by receiving permission from the Duke of Burgundy to hold a market on Wednesdays and two annual fairs. As a result, the ownership structure is unclear, there were several fiefdoms in the municipality.

One of the gentlemen was Philippes Bouton , who - probably thanks to the neighborhood - married a Marguerite du Fay in 1358 . On this occasion he donated the Notre-Dame de Pitié chapel in the church of Savigny, in which 3 members of the Bouton family are buried. In 1549 the rule fell into strange hands due to childlessness. The place was wealthy in the 15th and 16th centuries, beautifully situated on a hill, inhabited by various distinguished families (Simon Robard, Pierre du Palais, Jean de Porlans, Claude Bontauptol, Jean Saubiez, Pierre Sayne, Humbert de Bonal, the families de la Chambre, Grivel, Dunand, Tamisier).

Part of the municipality was a barony , which in 1440 belonged to a Guillaume de Luyrieux . In 1440 he sued the court because he wanted to oblige the residents to pay for the repairs to his castle. In 1496 the barony belonged to François Maréchal , in 1534 to Charles de la Chambre , Philibert and finally Jean de la Chambre , nobleman of the king's cabinet, in whose favor the lordship was elevated to a county in 1596 . In 1616 the residents were granted the right to use the salt of Salins-les-Bains . Through the marriage of Pierrette-Esmonde de la Chambre in 1618 René d'Amoncourt became Count of Savigny, in 1633 the lordship was seized because of a debt of 50,200 livres . By decision of the Council of State the sale was banned and Claude-Jacques de Saint-Mauris became Count of Savigny. In 1682, four annual fairs were approved, which were held on April 26th, June 15th, September 27th and December 28th. The Saint-Mauris remained lords of Savigny, the castle, located below the church, fell into disrepair and was destroyed during the revolution .

The place was devastated several times by raiding hordes and acts of war with the Free County. In 1637 the pastor of le Fay baptized and buried the residents of Savigny, as the church had been desecrated and the place was uninhabited for some time. In a meadow, called Préau met on the eve of the locust day the men from the Free County , the Bresse and Burgundy to the Fête des Cornards . The man who was the last to get married wore the bannière , a bull's head with horns on a pole. However, the festival has long since gone under. Courtépée mentions that the place is very nicely situated, but the paths and roads leading there are in a hideous condition .

heraldry

The municipality uses the coat of arms of the Saint-Maurice-de-Montbarrey family . They were Counts of Savigny and Le Fay in the 17th and 18th centuries and came from the House of Sainte-Croix . Blazon: in red a floating cross of buds in silver, in the head of the shield a blue bar with a golden eagle .
