Toponymy

The first mention in the area of La Genête concerns La Villeneuve , which was mentioned in 1059 as Villanova (German: New House). The hamlet is located at the intersection between the D339 and D39 roads in the northeast of what is now the settlement area.

In 1428 two church buildings were mentioned in the municipality, on the one hand the Curia Sancti-Theodori , a chapel that has now been destroyed, and Curia Sancte-Mariae, Villanovae de Genesta . Reference is made here for the first time to Genesta , the gorse , to which the later place name is derived. In the Saône-et-Loire department, hamlets and corridors appear around 20 times in connection with gorse , so it seems to have been a common plant.

history

Today's hamlet of Varennes (in the southwest of the municipality) belonged to the castellany of Cuisery , the center of the village was owned by the Knights Templar and later the Order of St. John . The hamlet of Villeneuve was created in the 14th and 15th centuries , while Veilly was created at the end of the 18th century, in connection with the construction of route royale 75 ( Chalon-sur-Saône - Grenoble ). The church was built in the 15th century, the porch in the 19th century. The church has acoustic peculiarities that are created by hollow bodies in the choir. In the 14th century - before the current church was built - the castle chapel in Villeneuve was also the parish church.

There was a castle in La Villeneuve , which in 1643 also contained the market halls. A planned expansion of the castle obviously did not take place, today the moat, bridge and drawbridge have disappeared. The tithe barn and a dovecote from the 16th century are still there. The owners of the castle and the manor were the Saint-Trivier , de Seyssel , de la Chambre , Bouchin , Bretagne and Deschamps families .

A building, called the Jerusalem Tower , was built by the Johanniter from Chalon and dates from the end of the 15th or beginning of the 16th century. The dendrochronological studies show that the tree trunks used were felled between 1450 and 1500. In 1843 the school and Mairie building became a community hall in the 20th century. In 1856 there were four grain mills and two hemp mills on the Sâne in La Villeneuve , and there was also a mill in Jouge on an Étang . In the 19th century, certain forest areas in the south were assigned to each hamlet for use. The following handicraft businesses existed: a weaver, a clog carver, a chair maker , a Wagner in the village and a clog carver and a blacksmith in Veilly . There were three annual markets and one weekly market. In 1988 there were 19 farms.
