Toponymy

The name comes from Lasiacum , which contains the Celtic word ach, aha, ara for water.

history

Lays used to be a place of some importance. North of the Doubs , the field name Le Môle refers to an old mill that once stood on the ruins of a moth . This former castle formed the border between the Duchy and Free County of Burgundy . Also on the north bank of the river was the church around 1600, together with part of the village. Floods completely destroyed the village, leaving only gravel banks. The residents were forced to rebuild their village on the plain south of the river. The current village church dates from the mid-19th century and is consecrated to Peter . A 16th century Pietà found in the Doubs is now on Rue du Bourg .

A document from 1525 indicates that gold was found in the sand of the Doubs . Since the 15th century there were also ship mills and a harbor on the south bank of the Doubs . From there, the crossing of the Doubs was ensured by boats, later by ferries , until the first bridge was built in 1900, which in turn was replaced in 1953.

The first settlement is likely to have taken place in Gallo-Roman times, possibly in connection with the construction of the Roman road between Pierre-de-Bresse and Pourlans . The exact course of this road is not known, but le vieux port could indicate that there was already a crossing over the Doubs . The lords later named themselves after the place, descendants of the de Lays held high positions at the court and in the army of the Dukes of Burgundy . In the first half of the 15th century, the rule came into possession of the boutons . Anthoine Bouton sold it to Philippe Chabot , Admiral of France in 1534 . Lays later belonged to changing owners, including the Coligny , until it was taken over by Pierre de Truchis in 1646 . The de Truchis had the castle rebuilt on the left bank of the river after it was destroyed in 1594 by the residents of Dole.

The toboggan from 1612 contains interesting references to regulations that applied in the region. Only the residents of Lays were allowed to fish in the Doubs , but only on foot. Those who fished with nets and nets were fined and their equipment was confiscated. Also included is the tariff for the river crossing, divided into shod and unshod horses and human passengers. The residents of Lays did not have to pay anything for the crossing, but had to deliver a sheaf of wheat or other grain to the ferryman every year. In addition, they had to cut down and bring in the wood necessary for the maintenance of the boats, on the other hand they were the only ones authorized to build and operate ship mills. The taxes are also remarkable, the landlord was entitled to the thirteenth . The residents were required to call three times loudly for the landlord's people before the harvest came in, so that they could each pull in the 13th sheaf.
