Toponymy

The name goes back to the Gallo-Roman name Frangiacum , which has been attested since 1065. The name indicates the possession of a Frangius , during excavations a Gallo-Roman settlement was actually found. The municipality has had the suffix en-Bresse since 1952.

history

In 1111 Frangiacum was owned by the Baume-les-Messieurs monastery . In the 14th century a family took the name of the place, in the 15th century the area belonged to the family of the Bouton de Fay , in the 17th century the property was divided and largely belongs to the Fyot de la Marche . The hamlet of Clémencey is a strategic point that oversees the connection between Switzerland and the Saône, close to the border with the Free County. In the Middle Ages, the lords of Sainte-Croix controlled the traffic on this connecting road and on the Seille, which became navigable here. The stately mill has been mentioned since 1404, and there were four other mills on the Seillette . the church dedicated to Saint Denis was built in the 16th century, presumably as a replacement for an older church mentioned as the Ecclesia de Frangeio as early as 1111 . In the first half of the 17th century, the Courdier family built their mansion in Abergement, a fief of the lords of Montcony , while the La Rodde family built a castle in Charnay . During the revolution , the seat of the Fyots was destroyed. In 1881 the girls' school, which today houses the Mairie , was built, in 1935 a Mairie-École was built. In 1988 there were 80 farms in the municipality.

heraldry

Since September 17, 1993, the municipality needs the coat of arms, which goes back to the former lords of Frangy-en-Bresse. The family has died out, so the coat of arms can be freely used by the community. It appears today on the official communal printed matter. Blazon: In blue a soaring lion holding a silver sword with gold decoration in his left hand.
