Toponymy

The chapel of Sanctus-Germanus de Bosco is mentioned for the first time in 1155 and is ultimately the name given to the name of the place. The current church is also dedicated to Saint Germain .

history

The place is on the old Roman road that led from Louhans to Bellevesvre . In the center of the village there is still a round moth with a moat and bridge. During the Swedish-French War and the War of Devolution , Saint-Germain and its surroundings were repeatedly at the front and suffered from the chaos of war. In 1370 the lordship lies with Geoffroy de Froloy , then passed to the Beauffremont, Damas, Bataille families , to the Duke of Foix and finally to the Scoraille family in 1670. In the 17th century, Saint-Germain-du-Bois was surrounded by huge forests with old wood that were destroyed in 1697. A large part of the beautiful houses and halls can be traced back to the Scorailles . The family owned a castle in the hamlet of Layer , along with a chapel that still exists and is dedicated to Claudius von Condat . At the turn of the century in the 18th century, the Scorailles had a castle built in the hamlet of Faye , which was restored in the 19th century but demolished in the middle of the 20th century. Alleys were laid out in a star shape, starting from la Grande Place , which the streets now follow in different directions. The last to be planted was the avenue towards la Balme , which still exists today. In 1794 the place was called Belle Place and in 1801 it became the capital of the canton. In 1828, the two hamlets of Margot were incorporated into the municipality at the expense of Devrouze and in 1840 Balosle at the expense of Frangy-en-Bresse . In 1844 the current church was built, the altar of which comes from Chalon-sur-Saône , the Mairie in 1847 , a new rectory in 1894 and the school building in 1896. In 1883 the Bourg-en-Bresse - Calais railway line was opened and in 1907 the post office took over the rectory, which in turn was set up on the Place du Monument . There were three water mills, three brickworks, and two potteries. In 1988 there were 79 farms in the community.

heraldry

The municipality has been using the coat of arms since September 16, 1993. Fields two and four of the fourth coat of arms refer back to the coat of arms of De Scoraille , who owned a large part of the municipality. Fields one and three refer to the main agricultural products in the municipality: Bresse chickens and maize. A colored enamel coat of arms is attached to the mairie . Blazon: Square: 1 in blue a golden rooster, 2 and 3 in blue three golden diagonal bars, 4 in blue a golden corn cob. The local government uses two different shades of blue in the coat of arms, which is heraldically incorrect. Only azure can be used.
