Toponymy

The place is first mentioned in 1072 as Ecclesia ruris Cerliacensis . The name Cerliacum at the time indicates a Gallo-Roman settlement, as it was the possession of a Cerlius or similar.

history

The Saubertier rule was later called La Balme and contained large parts of the present-day community. In the 17th century the rule passed to the de Scorailles . In the 18th century there was a half-timbered church , the current church was built in 1845 or 1873. The brick oratory in the hamlet of Chivière (on the D13) was probably built in the 19th century and was dedicated to Saint Genoveva . In 1798 the parish already had a parish hall, the rectory was built in 1820, and in 1910 the Mairie- École was built in the rectory courtyard . In 1912 another school was built in the hamlet of Ville-des-Maréchaux for the children of the more distant hamlets. A forge existed right next to the Mairie-École , which was in operation until 1975. Since 2000, the largest cassis grower in the Saône-et-Loire department has been based in Serley. In 1856 there was still a mill with 2 wheels and 2 oil mills , in 1988 48 farms were counted.
