Toponymy

It was first mentioned in 1308, when the name Saint-Estienne en Bresse was mentioned. In 1362, the existence of a church is explicitly pointed out with Ecclesia Sancti-Stephani (Étienne is the French form of Stephan). The church was consecrated to the abbot of Saint Peter in Chalon-sur-Saône and led to the current place name. During the revolution , the place was called level .

history

At the hamlet of Roussots there was a Roman road towards Fontaine-Bouland . A moth was found there, also in Corberan and Chaillots there is a farmhouse with a dovecote instead of a castle with a moat. Around three quarters of the community belonged to René de Montconis in 1640 , then passed to Théophile de la Menue , the Damas de Sassangy and the de Châtenay , Counts of Saint-Vincent , who had the castle built in the town at the beginning of the 18th century (today a farmhouse). Later the rule passed to the Chamillard , the Gagne de Perrigny and finally to the Goux de Saint-Seine .

The neo-Romanesque church was built in 1832, the first school in 1833 and a multi-class schoolhouse in 1873. In 1988 there were still 31 farms. In earlier times the place had the right to two fairs and there were two mills.
