Howard Crosby

Howard Crosby (born February 27, 1826 in New York , † March 29, 1891 ibid) was an American classical philologist , Presbyterian clergyman and university professor. From 1870 to 1881 he was Chancellor of New York University .

Life

Howard Crosby came from a long-established family. His great-grandfather was William Floyd , a co-signer of the Declaration of Independence. His parents were the farmer William Bedlow Crosby and Harriet Ashton Crosby. Howard Crosby learned Greek at the age of six and studied classical philology and theology at New York University from 1842 to 1844 . He then interrupted his career for health reasons and retired to his father's farm. In 1851 he was hired as Professor of Greek at New York University. In 1859 he moved to Rutgers University in the same capacity , but in the same year he resigned his professorship and began preparing for ministry. He earned a doctorate in theology (D. D.) from Harvard University in 1859 . In 1861 he was ordained a priest of the Presbyterian Church . That same year he turned down President Abraham Lincoln's offer to go to Greece as envoy.

From 1863 Crosby was a preacher at a Presbyterian church in New York. He published scholarly papers on the Old and New Testaments and books in which he gave recommendations on how to live. His reputation as a scholar led to his being appointed Chancellor of New York University in 1870. In 1870/71 he was president of the American Philological Association . In 1871 Columbia University awarded him an honorary doctorate in philosophy (LL. D.). From 1872 to 1880 Crosby was a member of the Committee for the Revision of the American New Testament. In 1873/74 he chaired the 85th General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in the USA. In 1881, after eleven years as Chancellor of New York University, Crosby resigned and devoted himself to his priesthood and publications.

Crosby was also committed to social issues. In New York he founded the YMCA and the Society for the Prevention of Crime, among others .
