Ward W. Briggs

Ward W. Briggs, Jr (born November 26, 1945 in Riverside , California ) is an American classical philologist who worked at the University of South Carolina from 1972 .

Briggs studied Classical Philology at Washington and Lee University ( B.A. 1967) and at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with Brooks Otis , where he wrote his master's thesis on Horace in 1969 and his doctoral thesis on Virgil in 1974 . From 1972 he taught at the University of South Carolina, first as an instructor, from 1974 as Assistant Professor of Classics, from 1980 as Associate Professor, from 1986 as Professor of Classics. In 1996 he was appointed Carolina Distinguished Professor of Classics and Louise Fry Scudder Professor of Humanities . He has now retired .

Briggs is primarily concerned with the Roman poet Virgil and with the history of classical studies in the United States. He is editor, co-editor and author of several standard works. He is particularly interested in Basil Lanneau Gildersleeve , the founder of modern classical studies in the USA.

Briggs is a member of the American Philological Association , the Classical Association of the Middle West and South (President 1988/98), the Vergilian Society of America, and the Cambridge Philological Society.
