history
In 1749 the university was founded by Irish and Scottish settlers as the Augusta Academy 30 km north of what is now Lexington. In 1776, in the rising patriotism of the American Revolution, it was renamed Liberty Hall . Four years later, it moved to Lexington, the name was changed to Liberty Hall Academy , and the school was approved by the Virginia General Assembly to award degrees. When George Washington donated $ 20,000 to the academy in 1796 , the name was changed to Washington Academy . In 1813 the institute moved to its present location in Lexington and was renamed Washington College . In 1865 Robert Edward Lee became president of the college and merged it with Lexington Law School, founded in 1849 . After his death in 1870, the college was renamed again to its current name. The School of Commerce was founded in 1906 and the School of Journalism in 1925 , the first of its kind in a college.
