The United States Attorney General is a member of the United States Cabinet and presides over the United States Department of Justice , without the title of Secretary.
His responsibilities include advising the government on justice issues, overseeing law enforcement, and representing the United States in court. Therefore, according to the German system, he is, for example, Minister of Justice and Attorney General in personal union. Now the Attorney General himself only tries cases of exceptional importance before the Supreme Court; most representations are now held by the Solicitor General of the United States .
In 1789, the office of Attorney General was created by the United States Congress for the purpose of prosecuting and representing in all Supreme Court disputes in which the United States is a party. He was also supposed to advise the President and Cabinet Ministers on all legal issues. A separate Ministry of Justice was only created in 1870 to support the Attorney General.
