Loretta Elizabeth Lynch (born May 21, 1959 in Greensboro , North Carolina ) is an American lawyer and politician with the Democratic Party . She served as Secretary of Justice of the United States from April 27, 2015 to January 20, 2017 . Between 1999 and 2001 and again from 2010 to 2015, she was US Attorney for the Eastern District of New York , which roughly corresponds to a German Chief Public Prosecutor before the Federal District Court for Eastern New York , and thus directed the prosecutionFederal law in Brooklyn , Queens , Staten Island, and Long Island .

On 8 November 2014, it was created by US President Barack Obama as the successor to outgoing Justice Minister ( United States Attorney General ) Eric Holder nominated. After a long delay from the Republican Party , it was confirmed by the Senate on April 23, 2015 . She held the office until it was handed over to the Trump cabinet on January 20, 2017. Her office was subsequently taken on by Deputy Justice Minister Sally Yates .

Early years and education

She spent many afternoons with her father in courtrooms as a child.

She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and American Literature from Harvard College (1981) and a Juris Doctor from Harvard Law School (1984).

Career

In 1999 she was appointed United States Attorney for the Eastern District of New York by then President Bill Clinton . Under her leadership, officers from the New York Police Department were investigated into the Abner Louima case.

In 2001 she resigned from office and became a partner at the law firm Hogan & Hartson (today: Hogan Lovells ). In 2010, Obama reappointed her as US Attorney for the Eastern District of New York .

On November 8, 2014, Obama nominated her to succeed the outgoing US Attorney General Eric Holder.

Private

She is married (Stephen Hargrove) and has two stepchildren .
