William Ramsey Clark (* 18th December 1927 in Dallas , Texas ; † 9. April 2021 in New York City , New York ) was an American lawyer , politician of the Democratic Party and peace activist who from 1967 to 1969 the 66th Attorney General (Attorney General) under President Lyndon B. Johnson . He was the last living member of the Johnson cabinet .

career

Ramsey Clark, born in 1927, was the son of Tom C. Clark , who was also Attorney General and Justice of the United States Supreme Court .

Clark served in the Marines in 1945 and 1946 , serving as a messenger in Europe. He then studied at the University of Texas at Austin and received in 1949 the degree of Bachelor of Arts . In 1950 he completed his studies with a Master of Arts and Juris Doctor from the University of Chicago .

From 1951 to 1961, Clark was a partner and partner in the law firm Clark, Reed and Clark . In 1956 he was admitted to the Supreme Court . From 1961 he worked under President John F. Kennedy as Assistant Attorney General for the Department of Justice ; In 1965 he became Deputy Attorney General and thus Deputy Minister Nicholas Katzenbach . As his successor he joined the cabinet of President Lyndon B. Johnson on March 10, 1967 , in which he remained until January 20, 1969. Clark had been attorney general on an interim basis since Katzenbach's departure in October 1966. During his time in the Justice Ministry, the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty was drawn up there. In 1971, Clark was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .

A tribunal was formed in February 1992 under the direction of Clark , which accused the US on 19 counts of having committed crimes against humanity in the Second Gulf War against Iraq . The tribunal was composed of 21 judges of various ethnicities and religions.

In late December 2004, Clark joined the 20-strong team of lawyers who defended former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein and which included his former Qatari colleague Najib al-Nuaimi. The trial was presided over by Judge Rizgar Muhammad Amin .

On March 18, 2006, he attended the funeral of former Yugoslav President Slobodan Milošević . He gave a speech in front of the parliament in Belgrade , where Milošević's coffin was laid out: “History will prove that Milošević was right. Accusations are only accusations. The tribunal had no evidence. "

In 2008 he received the United Nations Human Rights Award . Clark also received the Gandhi Peace Award in 1992 .
