Jamie Shona Gorelick (born May 6, 1950 ) is an American lawyer and business manager . She was the US Assistant Attorney General and a member of the Commission of Inquiry into the 9/11 attacks, and Vice Chairwoman of the world's largest mortgage company, Fannie Mae, during the financial crisis.

Life

After attending school, she studied at Harvard University and from 1972 to 1975 law at the Harvard Law School there . After her admission to the bar in the District of Columbia on November 25, 1975, she practiced law for many years and was later admitted to the US Supreme Court .

She was also involved in numerous legal and political organizations and was a member of the Board of Directors of the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation and the National Legal Center for the Public Interest as well as a trustee of the Urban Institute. She also took on roles in the Council on Foreign Relations and the Andrew Carnegie Foundation for International Peace .

In 1994 she became US Deputy Attorney General and Deputy Attorney General in the administration of US President Bill Clinton and continued in this position until 1997. One of her associates and advisors during this time was Michael Bennet , now a Democratic US Senator for Colorado . Their former activities had particular indirect influence on the government internal distribution of information on terrorism , such as from the military program Able Danger of US Special Operations Command .

After retiring from government service, she moved to the private sector and was Deputy Chairman of the Board of Directors of the world's largest mortgage bank, Fannie Mae, from 1997 to 2003. When the global financial crisis struck while she was there, she was nicknamed "Mistress of Disaster". In addition, she was not only a member of the Board of Directors of the world's largest oil exploration and oil field service company Schlumberger , and a member of the advisory board of BP , but has also been a member of the Board of Directors of United Technologies Corporation , a global manufacturer of technology products , since 2000 .

After the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 , she was appointed as a representative of the Democrats as a member of the commission of inquiry into these attacks and was a member of the commission until the final report, the so-called 9/11 Commission Report , was presented on August 21, 2004.

Currently, Jamie Gorelick, who was also admitted to practice in New York State in 2005, is a partner at Wilmer Hale , a law firm that now has 1,000 attorneys and is headquartered in Washington, DC. In March 2011 she was named as a possible candidate for the office of director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
