Michael Farrand Bennet (born November 28, 1964 in New Delhi , India ) is an American politician of the Democratic Party . He represents the State of Colorado since he was appointed by Governor Bill Ritter on 21 January 2009 at the US Senate , where he the successor to Secretary of the Interior appointed Ken Salazar took. In May 2019, he announced his candidacy for the 2020 presidential election .

Life

Bennet's father, Douglas J. Bennet, was working as an advisor to the then US Ambassador to India, Chester B. Bowles , at the time of his son's birth , and therefore lived in India with his wife, Susanne. Bennet Sr. later served as an advisor to the staff of US Vice President Hubert H. Humphrey .

Michael Bennet, who has a brother and sister, grew up in the United States, mostly in Washington, DC , where he graduated from the private St. Albans School . Even as a teenager, Bennet showed himself interested in politics when he worked as an errand boy in Congress during the holidays . Bennet graduated from Wesleyan University with a bachelor's degree in history. He then studied at Yale University , where he earned his degree in law obtained.

Bennet's political career began in the reign of US President Bill Clinton , when Bennet, then almost 30, was appointed advisor to Deputy Attorney General Philip Heymann . He continued this activity under Jamie Gorelick and Eric Holder . Bennet's father Douglas was also serving as Assistant Secretary of State for International Relations in the White House at the time .

In October 1997, Bennet married District Attorney Susan Daggett. She and her three daughters moved to Denver in 2001 . Here he found work as Chief of Staff on the team of the Mayor of Denver, John Hickenlooper . This appointed him in June 2005 to the school inspector and head of the Denver school district.

In January 2009, Governor Bill Ritter named Bennet to succeed Ken Salazar as Democratic Senator in his home state of Colorado. A replacement of Salazar became necessary because he had been appointed the new US Secretary of the Interior by US President Barack Obama . In the run-up to the 2010 Senate election , Bennet's nomination by his party was uncertain as he faced a serious competitor, Andrew Romanoff , former Speaker of the Colorado House of Representatives , who had the support of ex-President Bill Clinton. Ultimately, Bennet won surprisingly clearly with 54:46 percent of the vote and met in the election in November 2010 on the Republican Ken Buck , a prosecutor from Weld County . He won the election in a close neck-and-neck race against Buck (Bennet: 47.7% / Buck: 46.8%). Since he was re-elected in 2016, he will represent his state in the US Senate for the next six years. His new term runs until January 3, 2023.
