Assistant Secretary of State
The Assistant Secretary of State is an official designation in the United States Department of State ( State Department ); Today it corresponds roughly to the rank of a sub-department head in the German Foreign Office.
From 1853 to 1913, however, an Assistant Secretary of State was the second highest ranking official in the United States State Department ( State Department ) and thus Deputy Secretary of State . Before 1853, the Chief Clerk held this second rank. After 1913, the counselor held the second highest position. The Assistant Secretary of State was there until 1924; Today, that function corresponds to that of the Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs ( Deputy Secretary of State ).

Historical tasks
The varied duties of the early Assistant Secretaries were
- the supervision of diplomatic and consular offices,
- general supervision of correspondence,
- the consular appointments,
- the administration of the department and
- monitoring the economic development of the various geographic regions of the world.
Significant holders of the rank
Between 1853 and 1913 there were 25 Assistant Secretaries of State, and by 1924 there were four more . Notable incumbents were
- Ambrose Dudley Mann , first incumbent from 1853 to 1855; previously consul in Bremen
- John Hay , the 12th incumbent from 1879 to 1881; US Secretary of State from 1898 to 1905
- James D. Porter, Jr. , the 16th incumbent from 1885 to 1887; later governor of Tennessee
- William R. Day , the 22nd incumbent from 1897 to 1898; then from 1898 US Secretary of State and since 1899 Judge at the US Court of Appeals and / or Judge at the US Supreme Court
- John B. Moore , the 23rd incumbent in 1898; thereafter judge at international courts of law
- Robert Bacon , the 26th incumbent from 1905 to 1909; 1909 US Secretary of State
- John E. Osborne , the 29th incumbent from 1913 to 1916; Governor of Wyoming from 1893 to 1895 .
The same name for a completely different office in most states of the USA
There is also the post of Assistant Secretary of State at the US state level . This is then the deputy of the respective Secretary of State in the state government.
