Assistant Secretary of State

The Assistant Secretary of State is an official designation in the United States Department of State ( State Department ); Today it corresponds roughly to the rank of a sub-department head in the German Foreign Office.

From 1853 to 1913, however, an Assistant Secretary of State was the second highest ranking official in the United States State Department ( State Department ) and thus Deputy Secretary of State . Before 1853, the Chief Clerk held this second rank. After 1913, the counselor held the second highest position. The Assistant Secretary of State was there until 1924; Today, that function corresponds to that of the Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs ( Deputy Secretary of State ).

The varied duties of the early Assistant Secretaries were
