The Bureau of Intelligence and Research (INR) (dt .: Office of intelligence information and research ) is the news service of the Foreign Ministry of the United States . The INR was founded in 1946 and reports directly to the Foreign Minister .

Organization and mandate

The INR is only a very small, but nevertheless effective department within the US State Department with around 170 analysts and has the task of collecting and evaluating information using intelligence means . It bundles information for the politics of the US government and coordinates and supports secret service activities abroad as well as operations by other US security agencies.

Recruitment and Personnel

Most employees are recruited directly from universities and are experts in their respective fields. As a rule, the employees are only assigned to the INR for a limited period of time, so they also go through other departments during their employment with the State Department.

history

The United States Intelligence Board , April 28, 1965.
Sitting (LR): Lt. Gene. Joseph F. Carroll , USAF, DIA ; Lt. Gene. Marshall S. Carter , Deputy Director of Central Intelligence (DDCI); John McCone , Director of Central Intelligence (DCI); Thomas L. Hughes , INR Director; Lt. Gene. Gordon A. Blake , USAF, Director of NSA

Reichardt, US Atomic Energy Commission representative; Alan H. Belmont, representative of the FBI director; Brig. Gen. Charles J. Denholm , US Army observer

The INR was originally the research and analysis department of the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) and was subordinated to the US State Department shortly after the end of World War II in 1946 . This means that the service has, for example, only a tenth of the staffing capacity of the CIA's analysis department .

In May 2004, the National Security Archive released a classified INR report commissioned by the White House in 1969 and prepared by Thomas Hughes . This analysis criticized the US political and military strategy in the Vietnam War . This released document of the times made strong parallels with the handling of the Iraq crisis obvious.

In July 2004, criticized Intelligence Committee of the US Senate (Senate Select Committee on Intelligence) the performance of US intelligence in the prewar phase of the Iraq war sharply, but the INR has been explicitly exempt, but - was confirmed that this - on the contrary Service would have delivered exemplary good results.
