The Defense Intelligence Agency ( DIA , German  Defense Intelligence Agency ) is a military intelligence service of the United States , the umbrella organization of the intelligence services of the four armed services Army , Navy , Air Force and Marine Corps serves.

The DIA , established by Robert McNamara in 1961 through Directive 5105.21 , collects and analyzes the information obtained by the intelligence services of the armed forces and forwards the knowledge gained from this to the responsible decision-makers in the Pentagon and the US government as well as to the task forces. The Defense Attaché Service has been subordinate to the DIA since 1965 .

Its headquarters are at the intelligence evaluation center at the former Bolling Air Force Base (now part of the Anacostia-Bolling Joint Base) in Washington, DC There are also other locations and posts affiliated to the military attachés in the embassies of the United States.

The DIA essentially consists of four main departments ( Directorates ):

  • Directorate for Analysis
  • Directorate for Operations
  • Directorate for Science & Technology
  • Directorate for Mission Services

and five evaluation centers ( Intelligence Centers ), each with a geographical focus, in one case a thematic focus:

  • Americas Center
  • Asia / Pacific Center
  • Defense Combating Terrorism Center
  • Europe / Eurasia Center
  • Middle East / Africa Center

The National Intelligence University is also located on the DIA site , but it is planned to move to Bethesda , Maryland.

Like all members of the United States Intelligence Community , the DIA is integrated into the Intelink network. DIA also operates its own networks for communication with international partners, for example Stoneghost for communication with Commonwealth countries.
