The Director of Central Intelligence ( DCI ) was from 1946 to April 21, 2005 an official post within the government of the United States , which has been held since 1947 by the respective director of the Central Intelligence Agency .

The Director of Central Intelligence acted both as director of the foreign intelligence service Central Intelligence Agency and from 1981 as the superordinate head of the - at that time - 15 individual US intelligence services - the so-called Intelligence Community - and advised the US President on intelligence matters.

The office is split into D / CIA and DNI

In 2004, the 9/11 Commission , which examined and described the course of the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 , recommended that the office of Director of Central Intelligence be split up. This happened with the Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act of US President George W. Bush on December 17, 2004.

This resulted in the positions of Director of National Intelligence ( DNI for short ) and Director of the Central Intelligence Agency ( D / CIA for short ).
