Stansfield Turner (born December 1, 1923 in Highland Park , Illinois - † January 18, 2018 in Redmond , Washington ) was an American admiral and director of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).

Life

After attending Highland Park High School , he began studying at Amherst College in 1941 . He then began his military service in the United States Navy and was a graduate of the United States Naval Academy , from which he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering (BSElec.Eng.). He then completed with a Rhodes Scholarship is a postgraduate study at Oxford University and completed this in 1950 with a Master of Arts (MA).

In the course of his further military service, he was President of the Naval War College from 1972 to 1974 . During the presidency of US President Jimmy Carter , he was Director of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) from 1977 to 1981 and also Director of Central Intelligence .

After leaving this office, he was awarded the National Security Medal in 1981. In the course of his military career, he was also awarded the Legion of Merit , the Bronze Star and several other honors.
