history

Redmond is named after Luke McRedmond , who bought land there on September 9, 1870. On December 31, 1912, it received city rights .

economy

Microsoft employs around 40,000 people in and around Redmond. In addition to the software manufacturer, Redmond is also home to the US headquarters of Nintendo , and AT&T Wireless (a subsidiary of AT&T ) has its headquarters there.

Because of the annual bicycle race, which has existed since 1940, Redmond has the nickname " Bicycle Capital of the Northwest " (English Bicycle Capital of the Northwest ). The event has developed into a multi-day folk festival called Derby Days , in which, in addition to the bicycle race, an extensive entertainment program is offered, including a parade and fireworks.

Long ridiculed as "the city where you can't buy underwear" because it had hardly any retail stores, Redmond experienced a veritable "retail boom" in the 1990s. That led to the opening of Redmond Town Center in 1997, which is now the main shopping mall in the area.
