Renton is a city in King County in the state of Washington , United States . The 2010 Census counted 90,927 residents.

The city of Renton covers 17.3 mi² (44.8 km²), of which 0.3 mi² (0.8 km²) is water, with the Cedar River having the largest proportion of the water surface.

The city is located about 13 miles southeast of Seattle on the southeastern shore of Lake Washington .

history
Renton was founded in the 1860's by Erasmus M. Smithers who discovered coal in the area around Renton. Renton was an important supply base for the coal mined areas around Newcastle.
Renton was officially founded as a city on September 6, 1901. At that time, wood and coal were the main industries.
Due to its proximity to Lake Washington and the Cedar River and Black River, Renton was flooded regularly. In 1916, the opening of the Lake Washington Ship Canal reduced the risk of flooding. The construction of the canal lowered the water level in Lake Washington and the Cedar River was diverted into Lake Washington. The Black River dried up.

In the United States Census 2010 as of April 1, 2010, 90,927 inhabitants were counted.
During the Second World War the population in Renton increased sharply. The main reason for this was the construction of the B-29 Superfortress bomber by Boeing at the Renton plant .

North of Renton is the Seattle Seahawks Training Center , Virginia Mason Athletic Center , which opened in August 2008. With a total area of approx. 76,900 m², the VMAC is the second largest training camp in the NFL .

In Boeing -Werk Renton are Boeing 737 -Verkehrsflugzeuge final assembly.

Renton is on several major roads. Interstate 5 west and Interstate 90 north of Renton are served by Interstate 405 . To the south, State Route 167 connects Renton with Kent , Auburn and Puyallup .
Local public transport is handled by King County Metro and Sound Transit Express buses. Clayton Scott Field Airport (KRNT) in Renton has a 1,640 meter runway. The airport is used by Boeing, United States Customs and Border Protection and various air taxi and charter companies , among others .
education
The Renton School District offers schools for all grades from kindergarten through 12th grade. Renton Technical College opened in 1942 and offers a variety of associate degrees and diplomas in technical professions.
Economic and urban development
Renton developed from an industrial location to a location that is also interesting for big box retailers such as IKEA, Fry'S and also for federal authorities. The Federal Aviation Administration opened a branch in 2007, as did the Federal Reserve Bank in 2008.
Since 1996 the city administration and private investors have invested heavily in the city center. Among other things, a new transit center was created in collaboration with King County Metro Transit. In the immediate vicinity of the Transit Center, several combined residential and commercial buildings were built in a mixed area .
“The Landing” was built in the South Lake Washington district. A total of 880 apartments are available, as well as various retailers, restaurants and other commercial establishments. The Landing is marketed as an urban village due to its proximity to many shops and service providers.
