Skykomish is a small town ( town ) in King County in the State of Washington . At the 2010 census , Skykomish had 198 inhabitants after a decrease of "several thousand" in the 1920s.

Location of Skykomish in King County

In the Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest , about 79 kilometers east of Everett on the South Fork of the Skykomish River , the city was founded as a railroad stop. Today it is mainly a stopping point for tourists who want to visit the surrounding mountains, and in winter also the ski areas at the nearby Stevens Pass .

Due to its location in the extreme northeast of King County, mountains prevent the town from being developed by roads from King County. Instead, US Highway 2 (known in the area as the Cascade Highway ) connects Skykomish with Snohomish County in the north and over Stevens Pass (17 miles east of town) with Chelan County .

history

The name "Skykomish" comes from the Skykomish (or Skai-whamish ; originally considered a subgroup of the Snoqualmies ) tribe who lived in the area before the European settlers. The city of Skykomish was officially recognized as a local authority on June 5, 1909 .

From the 1890s to 1974 Skykomish was a repair and refueling station for the Great Northern Railway , which eventually became part of the Burlington Northern Railroad and currently the BNSF Railway . It was also once the western terminus of the electrified line (1909–1956) on the Cascade Tunnel route to Wenatchee . Here steam or diesel locomotives were changed or harnessed to the electric locomotives.

The disposal practices of this time resulted in the pollution of the soil, groundwater and the Skykomish River with oil and heavy metals . The BNSF (then BN) and the Washington State Department of Ecology started negotiations on the redevelopment in the mid-1980s and agreed a plan in 2006 in which the railroad company financed the redevelopment with 50 million dollars over a 3-year period (completed in 2009). The service included massive earthworks - in particular the replacement of the contaminated soil - and the reconstruction of a dike . (The total cost eventually exceeded $ 100 million)

During the renovation work, 22 of Skykomish's buildings (residential and commercial buildings) were temporarily relocated. After replacing the floor below, the buildings were moved back to their old location on new foundations and with new supply lines. The city was given modern amenities like sidewalks and street lighting, but Skykomish's historic character was retained. The installation of a sewage system that connected every building provided the greatest benefit for residents and businesses.

geography

According to the United States Census Bureau , the city covers an area of 0.85 square kilometers, of which 0.8 square kilometers are land and 0.05 square kilometers are water.
