The town's history goes back to 1869. After coal mining had begun in Coal Creek two years earlier , intensive forestry was practiced in the area of what is now Bellevue to supply the coal mines with timber. The city has had its current name since 1880.
At the turn of the 20th century, Bellevue was an agricultural town whose residents traded as far as the Seattle area , and with the establishment of the Northern Pacific Railway in 1904 in more distant areas. In 1940 the city was given a direct road connection to Seattle with the construction of a bridge over Lake Washington .
