Andrew Drury

Andrew Drury (born December 4, 1964 in Bellevue , Washington ) is an American drummer, percussionist, composer and music teacher in the field of jazz and improvised music .

Life

Drury's family initially lived in the eastern suburbs of Seattle before moving to Bainbridge Island in 1972 . In 1976 Andrew began to play drums: from 1979 to 1982 he had lessons with Dave Coleman Sr. with his childhood friend Michael Sarin. From 1980 he occupied himself with improvised and experimental music on the domestic piano, with which he has also composed since then. From 1983 to 1988 he studied with Ed Blackwell at Wesleyan University , where he earned a Bachelor of American Studies ; in Wesleyan he also studied with Bill Barron , Bill Lowe , Ramnad Raghavan , Robert OMeally and Annie Dillard , and he had drums lessons with Alan Dawson and Steve McCraven . In 1991 he received a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA). During this time he began working with musicians such as David Bindman , Jessica Lurie , Adam Lane , Sam Bardfeld , Will Holshauser and Ehran Elisha .

Drury lived in Middletown, Connecticut until 1992, when his future wife, Alissa Schwartz, graduated from Wesleyan. In his Connecticut work, he combined music, poetry, art, theater, dance and political activities. In the solo performance Thieves Die Like This (sponsored by the Middletown Arts Commission and the Centrum Foundation for the Arts ) he addressed the involvement of the United States in the civil war in El Salvador . In his series Earth Solos (1989) he played in the deserts and mountains of the western United States. During this time he also played with Brad Mehldau , Steve Davis , Mario Pavone , Joe Fonda , Nat Reeves , Phil Bowler , Stanton Davis , Wadada Leo Smith , Hotep Galeta , Wallace Roney , Vincent Herring , Chris Lightcap , Matt Moran , Giacomo Gates , Paul Flaherty , Hafez Modirzadeh , Kunle Mwanga , Anthony Braxton and Jackie McLean . As a statement on the 500th return of America's discovery in 1492 by Christopher Columbus , Drury and Alissa Schwartz initiated the street theater program Connect! , with whom they performed in Central America, Eastern Europe and Scandinavia in 1992/93. He lived in the Seattle area from 1993 to 1999 before moving to New York City. In the 1990s he worked a. a. with Eyvind Kang , Wayne Horvitz , Wally Shoup , Michael Bisio , Buddy Catlett , François Houle , Jenny Scheinman and Pete Yellin ; In 1994/95 he toured with Jim Nolet . In the 2000s he worked on a tribute album for Ed Blackwell ( As We Speak ); He also worked on various projects with Brad Shepik , Briggan Krauss , Peggy Lee , Dylan van der Schyff , Avram Fefer , Reuben Radding and Jason Kao Hwang as well as with the artist Danijel Zezelj . In the field of jazz he was involved in 15 recording sessions between 1996 and 2011.

Drury has received a number of grants for his work, including a. from the National Endowment for the Arts , New York Foundation for the Arts , Washington State Arts Commission , Seattle Arts Commission , King County Arts Commission, and the Artist Trust . Since 1989 Drury has been teaching in various institutions and at festivals in the USA, Guatemala and Nicaragua. From 1995 to 1999 he was artist in residence at the Washington State Arts Commission, 1997–99 at Very Special Arts Washington . He currently teaches at the Manhattan New Music Project and the NYC School District school system in the Creative Music Educators program .
