Reuben Radding

Reuben Radding (* 1966 in Washington, DC ) is an American jazz bassist , composer, music teacher and sound engineer who is best known for creative jazz and new improvisation music.

Live and act

Radding began his musical career in the Washington DC punk scene . After moving to New York in 1988, he studied double bass with Mark Dresser and composition with Edgar Grana; William Parker had a strong influence on his musical development . He played in various genres from avant-garde jazz to swing , folk , pop to klezmer and chamber music in the downtown scene with musicians such as John Zorn , Elliott Sharp , Anthony Coleman , Andrea Parkins , Dave Douglas , Roy Campbell and Rashid Bakr . In 1995 he toured Europe and Canada with Marc Ribot . With his own formation Myth Science he played compositions by Sun Ra and released the album Love in Outer Space for the Knitting Factory label. Radding also co-founded the experimental trio Refuseniks in 1995 with John Hollenbeck and Ted Reichman .

In early 1997 he moved to Seattle ; there he played in the trio of alto saxophonist Wally Shoup and u. a. with guest musicians such as Saadet Türköz , Carlo Actis Dato and Wolfgang Fuchs . In 2001 he performed in a duo with Daniel Carter at the Earshot Jazz Festival; the concert recording, which was released as the album Luminescence in 2003 by AUM Fidelity , brought him international attention. He returned to New York in early 2002 and has lived in Brooklyn ever since . He worked in his own trio with vibraphonist Matt Moran and clarinetist Oscar Noriega ( Intersections , 2005) as well as in the improvisation trio with Tara Flandreau and Carrie Shull ( The Branch Will Not Break , 2005). He also recorded albums with Ursel Schlicht , Stephen Gauci and Carlos Bechegas (partly in duo cast). With Nate Wooley and Mary Halvorson he forms the formation Crackleknob , which recorded the album of the same name on HatHut Records in 2006 . He also taught master classes and held workshops at colleges, universities and high schools. As a sideman he worked with various klezmer ensembles such as Frank London . Radding runs the Pine Ear Music label and the STATS recording studio in Brooklyn.
